About Papatūānuku
The Papatūānuku Independency Trust provides a constructive, caring and professional family-style environment for people with intellectual disabilities. Here we empower our family members to make their own decisions, allowing them to participate and contribute to their personal development, their home and their wider community.
OUR VISION
We strive to live up to the name gifted to us - Papatūānuku, the earth mother. We aim to be recognised as a place where people are valued, respected and know happiness.
Papatūānuku Independency Trust will be a sustainable family-style and caring home, supporting everyone to achieve their highest possible level of independence.
OUR HOME
Our home currently has 10 residents, three of whom have been part of our family since our inception in Auckland in 1989. Papatūānuku sits in an idyllic rural environment sheltered by mature native trees and gardens looks out over the waters of Waikawa Bay in Picton.
Our female residents live as a group in our central brick home, along with staff, while the men live more independently. They have a series of separate, independent rooms, with their own cooking and washing facilities. But they maintain their strong daily connections to the main house where the kitchen is the beating heart of our community, shared with staff who are mentors and friends.
Our aim is to integrate residents into what is a supportive local community, with work and leisure activities suited to their capabilities.
He aha te mea nui o te ao?

What is the most important thing in this world?
It is people, it is people, it is people.
